Its gonna be 5years we are living in and renovating the farmhouse by the river, 10 years we are living and working in Japan. we never had a plan or always had the plan to let the door open and embrace unknown situations.
June 2021, we just finished to rebuild a townhouse in Kyoto, just started to discover and experience importance of fibres in japanese traditional constructions. Timber, tatami, straw ropes, woven shoes and garment, straw mixed with soil for walls, paper for partition, fibre everywhere. we wanted to play more.
And here we arrived in the bed of a valley in the japanese countryside, meeting with a house looking for breathing, with a garden wishing for light, with a river offering its fresh stream and a deciduous forest as background.
A living environment that wasn’t expecting us, with its own decision making systems and shared responsibilities. A place for experimentation, learning, discovery and above all, the practice of alive architecture and construction.
Here we go ! we told each other.
During three weeks, before the rainy season started, an unexpected dance took place above the river each night. flashing members were increasing day by day, until we all twirl in the water mirror.Such an invitation is irresistible.
So we started questioning, listening to and exchanging with this new territory. preparing materials for the thatched roof renovation taught us a lot about where we live. Meaningful, obvious and joyful. Planting rice in May, harvesting cedar bark in august, rice in September, bamboo in October, miscanthus in November and timber in winter.
This environment offers us material to build, we spend time and energy to enhance its biodiversity.
Soon animals join us, help us maintaining, fertilizing the land and contribute to the daily refrain.
There is something primitive in this cycle. the territory makes the house, the house offers living beings a place to rest, living beings maintain land.
There is something eternal in this house. it holds together and ages hand in hand. you can change one piece, it still holds up.
Architecture is a small part of this cycle. by hands. on site. with joy.
川沿いの農家に住みながら改修を始めてからもうすぐ5年、日本で暮らし働き始めてから10年になります。私たちは常に具体的な計画は立てずに、扉を開けたまま、未知の状況を受け入れることを心がけてきました。
2021年6月、私たちは京都の町家の改築を終えたばかりで、日本の伝統的な建築における材料の大切さを見出し、体験し始めたばかりでした。木材、畳、藁縄、編み込まれた靴や衣類、壁に用いられる藁と土の混合物、仕切り用の和紙…至る所に材料があります。私たちはもっと素材と戯れたいと思いました。
こうして、私たちは日本の山郷にある谷間の底にたどり着きました。生き物のように息づく家、光を抱擁する庭、清らかなで透明な清流、そして背景に広がる落葉樹の森林と出会いました。
私たちを待たずとも、ずっとそこにあった生きられた環境は、それぞれの意思を生み出すしくみと共有された役割がありました。試すこと、学ぶこと、発見すること、そして何よりも「生きている建築」と「建てること」を実践するための場所。
さあ、始めよう！と私たちは互いに言い合いました。
梅雨が始まる前の3週間、毎晩、川の上で唐突にダンスが繰り広げられました。水しぶきを上げる仲間は日ごとに増え、やがて私たちは皆、水鏡の上でくるくると舞い踊りました。そんな誘いは抗えませんでした。
私たちは、この新たな土地に問いかけ、耳を傾け、対話を始めました。茅葺き屋根の改修に向けた資材の準備を通じて、私たちが暮らすこの土地について多くのことを学びました。それは有意義で、当然のことであって、喜びに満ちたものでした。
5月には稲を植え、8月には杉の樹皮を収穫し、9月には稲を、10月には竹を、11月にはススキを、そして冬には木材を収穫します。
この環境は私たちに建築の材料をもたらし、そして私たちは生物の多様性を高めるために時間とエネルギーを費やしています。
やがて私たちにはいくつかの動物も加わり、土地が維持され豊かになることを手助けし、日々のリズムに彩りを添えてくれます。
このサイクルには、どこか原始的なものがあります。
土地が家を作り、家が生き物たちに憩いの場を与え、生き物たちが土地を維持する。
この家には永遠の何かがある。それは一体となって、共に時を重ねていく。一部を取り替えても、依然としてしっかりと持ちこたえる。
建築は、この循環のほんの一部に過ぎない。手作業で。現場で。喜びを。
